Having rust stains in your pool can be unsightly and frustrating. But don’t worry, there are effective methods to remove those stubborn stains and restore the beauty of your pool. In this article, we will discuss different methods that actually work, depending on the type and cause of the stain.

The Sock Method

If you have rust stains on your pool surfaces, the sock method can be a great solution. Simply fill a sock with a granular acid like sodium bisulfate or ascorbic acid, and rub it on the stain. The acid will dissolve the rust and lighten the stain. Make sure to wear protective gear and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using this method.

The Jandy Stain Master

For more precise and efficient stain removal, the Jandy Stain Master is a useful tool. It attaches to a pool pole and delivers a controlled amount of acid directly to the stain. You can use muriatic acid or ascorbic acid with this tool.

The Vitamin C Tablet Method

If you prefer a simple and natural method, try using vitamin C tablets. Just rub the tablet on the stain and watch it fade away. This method is most effective for small and superficial stains.

The Metal Sequestrant Method

To prevent future rust stains, you can add a metal sequestrant to your pool water. This chemical binds with the metals in the water and prevents them from staining the pool. Lower your pH level before adding the sequestrant, and run your filter for at least 24 hours. Don’t forget to clean your filter afterward.

The Lemon and Salt Method

For fiberglass pools, the lemon and salt method works wonders. Cut a lemon in half, dip it in salt, and rub it on the stain. Rinse the area with water and repeat if necessary.

The Pool Shock Method

If rust stains are accompanied by bacteria and algae, the pool shock method can help. Use a high dose of chlorine or non-chlorine shock to kill any contaminants. Test and balance your pool water before shocking, and brush the pool thoroughly afterward. Avoid swimming until the chlorine level drops below 3 ppm.

Preventing Rust Stains

To prevent rust stains from coming back, here are some tips:

  • Keep your pool water balanced by regularly testing and adjusting pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and chlorine levels.
  • Use a metal remover product if your water source has high levels of metals.
  • Clean your pool regularly by removing leaves, dirt, debris, and metal objects.
  • Vacuum and brush your pool walls and floor weekly or more often if needed.
  • Cover your pool when not in use to protect it from dirt, debris, rainwater, and sunlight that can cause staining.

By following these methods and preventive measures, you can say goodbye to rust stains and enjoy a sparkling clean pool all season long.
